Funding pattern

What this funder pays for, at what size, and how to position adjacent work. Read from their filings, with every number checked against the record.

Where the money goes

  • Vaccine procurement and country delivery through UNICEF (over 60% of dollars)
  • Immunization program technical assistance in low-income countries (CHAI, JSI, PATH)
  • Cold chain, supply chain and last-mile delivery (VillageReach, Nexleaf, Zipline, Parsyl)
  • Health data systems and digital tools (Zenysis, Khushi Baby, Dimagi, Premise)
  • Health financing and policy advocacy (World Bank, R4D, Global Health Advocacy Incubator)
  • University-based measurement and evaluation (Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Yale, MIT)

Typical grant

Median grant is about $507,000, with the middle half between $195,000 and $1.65 million. The enormous checks go to procurement and country delivery partners: UNICEF took $69M to $88M every single year, and CHAI, JSI, PATH, the World Bank and CDC Foundation land in the $1M to $12M band. University grants are the small end, $10,000 to $5.5M but usually under $250,000, and nearly every recipient of size appears in two or three consecutive years, so this is a renewing partner roster rather than a fresh competition each cycle.

Their words

Phrases from their own grant descriptions, worth speaking back to them.

  • PARTNER SUPPORT
  • PROCUREMENT FEE & PARTNER SUPPORT

Positioning adjacent work

  • Anchor to an existing partner's workstream: subcontract through JSI, PATH, CHAI or Johns Hopkins rather than approaching directly.
  • Frame work as immunization delivery support, not research. Every entry is coded partner support to a program.
  • For a first university engagement, size the ask at $50,000 to $250,000, matching Yale, MIT, Penn State, GWU.
  • Emphasize cold chain, supply chain data or coverage measurement in Gavi-eligible countries, the three areas funding smaller partners.

Worth knowing: This is a multilateral alliance disbursing operating funds to implementing partners under contract, not a responsive grantmaker. UNICEF alone absorbs roughly $238M of the $377M on file, and the same 15 or so organizations recur year after year, so a new name enters almost always as a subcontractor or through an existing relationship with Gavi's Geneva secretariat.

Top recipients

Repeat recipients are the strongest signal of whether a funder has an open door or quietly re-funds the same organizations.
